the short answer

In three lines.

big suits
big suits a creator whose forms exist to turn Instagram attention into a contact list they keep, and who wants the link, the form and the follow-up to be one system instead of three.
Typeform suits
Typeform suits businesses that want forms built with AI to feed automated follow-up and research workflows, and forms that can take a file, a payment or a signature.source 1source 2
the difference
A form whose answers land on a contact record in the same workspace as the Instagram DM and the tracked link that led there, against a form builder whose follow-ups go out by email and SMS.

side by side

What each one does.

big compared with Typeform. Claims about Typeform were checked 29 September 2026 and each cites its source below.
FeaturebigTypeform
Conditional branchingYes. A big form is a sequence of pages with fork rules on the way out of each page and show-when conditions on individual fields, so which page a visitor sees next depends on the answers they have already given.Yes. Branching rules read "Go to [destination], when [condition]". The destination is a question, a Question Group or an Ending, and the condition can check an earlier answer, a URL parameter or a value calculated in the form. Hide questions, hide answer choices, calculations, scoring and outcome quizzes are separate Logic tools. Logic is set up in the desktop builder.source 8
Question typesYes. big form fields are short text, long text, email, Instagram handle, number, single choice, multiple choice, dropdown, rating and Likert scale.Yes. Contact Info, Email, Phone Number, Address, Website, Multiple Choice, Dropdown, Picture Choice, Yes/No, Legal, Checkbox, NPS, Opinion Scale, Rating, Ranking, Matrix, Long Text, Short Text, Video and Audio, Clarify with AI, FAQ with AI, Payment, Number, File Upload, Google Drive, Date, Scheduler and Signature, plus Question Group, Welcome Screen, Statement and End Screen for structure.source 2
File uploads, payments and signaturesNo. big forms do not accept file uploads, take payments, collect signatures, or offer ranking, matrix or scheduling questions.Yes. File Upload and Payment are question types "available on our paid plans", and Payment takes money through Stripe or PayPal. A Signature question lets respondents type, draw or upload a signature. A Scheduler question books time through Google Calendar or Calendly.source 2
Form versioningYes. Every save that changes a form's definition snapshots a new version, and the responses table reads each answer against the version its submitter actually saw, so a question added or retired later never silently rewrites older responses.Partly. Edits stay private until you press Publish. Once a live form has responses, deleting a question or a choice, changing a question type or toggling multiple selection removes the results collected for it, and adding or reordering choices keeps responses but mixes data from before and after the change. The documented safeguards are exporting results first or duplicating the form. The article does not describe a version history.source 9
Response and drop-off analyticsYes. big reports a form's views, starts, submissions and abandons, the average time a completer spends in it, and per-page drop-off keyed to the form's own pages, so a branching form still reports where people quit.Yes. Form performance metrics (views, starts, submissions, completion rate and time to complete) and performance over time on Basic, Plus, Business and Growth Flow. Question drop-off analysis and performance optimization tips on Business and Growth Flow; AI Smart Insights on Growth Flow.source 5
Spreadsheet export of responsesNo. big has no per-form CSV or spreadsheet download. Responses are read in the dashboard, fetched through the responses API, or taken from the workspace data export.Yes. Responses download as CSV or XLSX: all of them, a selection, or the ones matching a filter or search. File uploads download together as a .zip. Export is done from a desktop, not the mobile builder.source 10
Full account data exportYes. The workspace owner can download every contact, form and form response as one JSON file from the dashboard, which is what a GDPR Article 20 portability request needs.Yes. The account owner can request a ZIP by email holding form definitions as JSON and org members, workspaces and workspace members as CSV. Results download per form as CSV or XLSX. Form definitions are exported without uploaded images, and deleted forms or results cannot be recovered.source 11
Who owns the contact a form capturesYes. Contacts captured through big belong to the creator, not to big Followers belong to the platform; the contact list does not.Yes. Typeform states that the creator of a typeform is responsible for personal data submitted through it and that Typeform only processes that data on the creator's behalf, so respondents exercise their GDPR rights with the creator.source 12
Messaging automation from a submissionYes. big runs Instagram DM automations, branching forms and trackable short links as one platform, and each hands off to the next: a comment becomes an auto-DM, the DM carries a tracked link, the link opens a form, the form fills a contact record.Paid add-on. Contacts & Automations is included in Growth Flow and available as an add-on for Plus plans and above. It syncs responses into one contact database, segments contacts, and runs workflow automations whose actions include follow-up emails and text (SMS) messages.source 3
Channels the tool can message onNo. big automates Instagram only. It does not send on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, SMS or email.Yes. Follow-ups go out "by email, SMS, or your connected tools". The page does not name Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger as channels Typeform sends on.source 3
Import an existing formYes. big can import a form from a connected third-party form builder over OAuth, mapping each supported question onto a big field and listing every question it could not carry across.Yes. The integrations directory lists Google Forms with the line "Turn a Google Form you created into a typeform".source 13
API, CLI and MCP accessPartly. CLI and MCP access on tiny, big and bigger, not on teeny.Yes. The Developer Portal documents an MCP server for LLM clients, the Create API (create, retrieve, update and delete typeforms, themes and images), the Responses API, the Webhooks API and an Embed SDK. No CLI is named.source 14

who each is for

Pick the one that fits.

These are not close calls. If you are in the right-hand column, the other product is the better buy and we would rather you knew now.

Built for big

  • You collect leads from Instagram and want the DM, the tracked link and the form to be one chain rather than three tools that hand off by copy and paste.
  • You want every submission to land on a contact record in your own workspace, which you can tag, filter and download.
  • You want branching that decides which page a visitor sees next from the answers they have already given, and a form that keeps reporting where people quit after you add a page.
  • You want a command-line tool as well as an API and an MCP server for creating and rewriting forms from a script or an agent.
  • Text and choice questions are enough for you: nothing you collect needs a file, a payment or a signature.

Better served by Typeform

  • Your form has to take a file upload, a payment through Stripe or PayPal, or a signature.source 2
  • Your audience is reached by email or SMS rather than Instagram, and you want the follow-up sent from the same tool that hosts the form.source 3
  • You need a vendor with published SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001 certifications, and HIPAA, SSO or an EU data center on an Enterprise plan.source 4source 5
  • You want to start today on a free plan and grow to as many as 50,000 responses a month on Business.source 6source 7
  • You want Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client to build and edit forms, analyze responses, manage contacts and set up automations in a forms account you already use.source 15

the real difference

Where the two part ways.

big is machines that hand off: a comment becomes a DM, the DM carries a tracked link, the link opens a form, the form fills a contact you own.

Where a submission ends up

With Typeform
A Typeform submission is stored in the form's Results, where it can be downloaded as CSV or XLSX. To keep it in a contact list, Typeform offers the Contacts & Automations add-on, which syncs responses "to a single contact database", or marketing automation integrations such as Klaviyo, HubSpot, Intercom and Mailchimp.source 10source 3source 16
With big
A big submission becomes a contact record in the creator's own workspace, stitched to the email or Instagram handle it carried, and the whole list downloads as JSON whenever the owner asks for it.
Best for
Creators whose forms exist to build a list they keep, rather than to file a report they read once.

The link, the form and the reply are one chain

With Typeform
Typeform connects a form to other apps from its Connect panel, adds Calendly, Google Drive, Stripe and PayPal as questions inside the form, and offers webhooks that send each response to a URL as soon as it is submitted.source 17source 5
With big
big runs Instagram DM automations, branching forms and trackable short links as one platform, and each hands off to the next: a comment becomes an auto-DM, the DM carries a tracked link, the link opens a form, the form fills a contact record.
Best for
Anyone whose traffic arrives from an Instagram comment or DM, where the gap between the message and the form is where the leads are lost.

Editing a form that is already live

With Typeform
Typeform recommends exporting results or duplicating the form before deleting a question or choice, changing a question type or toggling multiple selection on a live form, because those edits remove results already collected. Adding or reordering choices keeps responses, but results then mix data from before and after the change.source 9
With big
Every save that changes a form's definition snapshots a new version, and the responses table reads each answer against the version its submitter actually saw, so a question added or retired later never silently rewrites older responses.
Best for
Anyone who keeps one form running for months and needs last quarter's answers to still mean what they meant.

choose Typeform if

Where Typeform is the right answer.

These are things big does not do. If one of them is the job you are hiring a tool for, stop here and buy theirs.

Files, payments and signatures

What they do
Typeform has File Upload, Payment and Signature question types. From Basic, file uploads accept files up to 10 MB each with 1 GB of storage on the account, and payment questions connect to Stripe or PayPal. The pricing comparison marks the Signature question on Growth Flow.source 2source 18source 5
Where big stands
big forms do not accept file uploads, take payments, collect signatures, or offer ranking, matrix or scheduling questions.
Best for
Anyone whose form has to take a file, a payment or a signature.

Responses open straight in a spreadsheet

What they do
Every Typeform form's responses download as CSV or XLSX, whole, selected or filtered, and the Google Sheets integration can send responses to a sheet as they arrive.source 10
Where big stands
big has no per-form CSV or spreadsheet download. Responses are read in the dashboard, fetched through the responses API, or taken from the workspace data export.
Best for
Anyone whose workflow starts by opening the responses in a spreadsheet.

Follow-ups by email and SMS

What they do
Typeform's Contacts & Automations follows up "by email, SMS, or your connected tools", and its integrations directory connects forms to apps such as Klaviyo, Calendly, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Salesforce and Slack.source 3source 13

big automates Instagram only. It does not send on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, SMS or email.
Best for
Anyone whose audience is not on Instagram.

how each one connects

How each one connects.

What each product does to reach Instagram, stated for both. Every line in the right-hand column cites a page of theirs, so none of it has to be taken on trust from a page that sells the other one.

big

  • big sends every reply and DM through the official Instagram API from Meta.
  • big never asks for an Instagram password and never operates a bot that pretends to be the creator.
  • There is no scraping and no browser automation.
  • The workspace owner can download every contact, form and form response as one JSON file from the dashboard, which is what a GDPR Article 20 portability request needs.

Typeform

  • Typeform states its security and compliance framework is certified to SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 27017:2015, ISO/IEC 27018:2019 and ISO/IEC 42001, audited by independent companies, and that it is listed at CSA STAR Level 1.source 4
  • Typeform encrypts data in transit with TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 and at rest, backups included, with AES using a 256-bit key. The platform runs on AWS with main servers in Virginia, USA.source 4
  • Typeform lists GDPR compliance and two-factor authentication on every plan it compares, and HIPAA compliance, SSO and a choice of US or EU data center on Enterprise only.source 5
  • For a Typeform respondent, the form's creator is responsible for their data and Typeform processes it on the creator's behalf, so GDPR requests go to the creator.source 12

per month

Typeform

39 USD to 379 USDsource 19

per month, with 100 to 10,000 responses a month included

Typeform counts responses per month, a base that resets every month on both monthly and yearly plans: 100 on Basic, 1,000 on Plus, 3,000 on Talent and 10,000 on Business and Growth Flow, with more bought up to 750, 2,500, 7,500 and 50,000. big counts automation steps per week. questions

Questions about big and Typeform.

Can I use big today?

Not yet. big is pre-launch and access is by waitlist, so a reader comparing the two today can try only one of them.

What happens to a form submission after someone hits submit?

It is stored against the form, and if it carried an email address or an Instagram handle it is stitched to a contact record in your workspace. From there it can be tagged, filtered, and picked up by an Instagram DM automation.

Can I change a live form without breaking the responses I already have?

Yes. Every save that changes the definition snapshots a new version, and the responses table reads each answer against the version its submitter actually saw, so a question you add or retire later does not rewrite older responses.

How much branching can a big form do?

A form is a sequence of pages. Each page can carry fork rules that send a visitor to a different page depending on their answer, and individual fields can be shown only when a condition on an earlier answer holds. The routing graph is checked for loops when you save, so a form always terminates.

Can I get my data out?

Yes. The workspace owner can download every contact, form and form response as one JSON file from the dashboard, and responses are also readable through the API. There is no per-form CSV download today.

What can big forms not do?

They do not accept file uploads, take payments, collect signatures, or offer ranking, matrix or scheduling questions. Fields are short and long text, email, Instagram handle, number, single and multiple choice, dropdown, rating and Likert scale.
